The Story

My name is Paul Oldroyd – this is how Oldroyd’s Corner began

After a career in horticulture spanning over 24 years, I wanted to find a unique way to share my knowledge and my passion for the subject. A chance conversation in 2016 with a gardening client of mine, Jon Los, led us down the path to creating Oldroyd’s Corner.

Jon’s family emigrated from The Netherlands to the East Riding of Yorkshire and Hull in the 1930s. Their knowledge of growing produce and cut flowers under glass enabled them to build a 20 acre  business. Growing like this in the glasshouses provided year round salad crops to the local area.

Over the years, the glasshouses were replaced by a business park and garden centre. One remained, an acre set behind Woodmansey Garden Centre.

Together, Jon and myself have brought it back to life with a new purpose! An awful lot of hard work, late nights and the support of donations from the public have made it into a beautiful place for everyone to be able to enjoy.

The central lawn is my pride and joy, and I think it helps to knit the garden together. I’m always planning for new projects, and for 2021 a teaching area will be built, along with developing the World Food and Spice Collection, and the Nature Pond outside. Partnerships with charities and organisations are ongoing, and the future looks exciting for the garden.

Thank you for taking the time to visit, and please do approach me for a chat… if you can find me in the jungle, that is!
