Having a great volunteer program at Oldroyd's Corn

Having a great volunteer program at Oldroyd's Corner helps to keep our garden running smoothly. Yesterday was a good productive Friday.
1-2 Pam and Vivian tackling the rose pruning. This is a little late for the greenhouse, as they come into bloom much earlier in this sheltered environment, but they only stopped flowering two weeks ago!

Because there was rose pruning it was a good chance for Ian and Cheryl (3-6) to get some rose cuttings done for new stock for community projects.

We had 900 mixed English woodland trees donated to us so Mo and her daughter Lynn (7-8) are potting them on for future projects in the community.

We have Keith and Michael mulching the flower bed around the band stand, using the material removed from what will be our future gravel garden.

Also not in the photos we have Patricia planting tulip and daffodil bulbs in the rose garden. As Friday is housekeeping day, I was cleaning tools and undertaking repairs.

Chopping and dropping the Gunnera and bananas today with the volunteers! This is simply leaving the cut back plant material on the soil surface to rot down.

The aim of this method is to add more organic matter to the soil, which improves the structure and adds nutrients. It is also a temporary weed suppressant, and provides a place for our resident hedgehogs to hibernate!
