In The Beginning…

The Dutch migrated to Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire in the 1930-40’s in their 1000’s and, with their superior knowledge of horticulture under glass and their farming skills, they transformed the area – providing employment, infrastructure and integrating into the communities.

In Woodmansey many such families arrived and on this 20 acre site the Los Family built greenhouses and became salad growers.

Over the years the greenhouses here have been replaced by offices, warehouse, factories and a wonderful Garden Centre.

All but one acre is left.

This one.

Our Story…

In the spring of 2016 a local gardener, Paul Oldroyd, approached the Beverley Garden Centre (the tenants) with an idea.

He had been told that there was one remaining acre of glasshouses to the rear of this prestigious and well-appointed store that was unused and falling into disrepair and together they agreed that something must be done to restore and use this empty space!

By October of the same year Paul’s dreams of a magical indoor “all weather” garden were taking shape: firstly the removal of weeds, a particularly testing incident with a wasps nest, then the edging and path-making and finally the digging and feeding of the soil in preparation for planting.

All this back breaking work carried out by Paul and Les in anticipation of an explosion of flowers and foliage in the coming months.

We are at the very start of our adventure and the plants and borders are in their infancy. The warmth and protection afforded by the glass will help the plants to grow very quickly and we hope to have a wonderful display for you all year round.

The transformation will boast stunning scented borders, a jungle garden, walkways covered with creeping climbers, exhibits and displays, a culinary garden and a grassed seated area for relaxation and contemplation. With plants supplied by Beverley Garden Centre, local friendly enthusiasts and volunteers in this ever-changing Show Garden, we hope to inspire you to get those gardening gloves on and join in the buzz. Suitable for all age groups, why not take a trip to include the Garden Centres Café; The Topiary Coffee Shop that offers a delicious selection of meals and snacks, with everything from a lazy breakfast to an indulgent afternoon tea, fabulous home baking to fantastic daily specials? Many EVENTS will dot the calendar, from basket-making workshops, cookery demonstrations, to concerts and local art EXHIBITIONS.

May we invite you to come with us on this amazing journey and explore this indoor haven?

We hope to delight your eyes and stimulate your senses.
